In 2012, in celebration of two hundred years of Spanish lottery, the El Niño was drawn in Cádiz, the birthplace of the most famous Spanish lottery, El Gordo de Navidad.

This lottery wasn’t always drawn on the 6th of January. The first 3 draws were on 6th November from 1877 to 1890. For a number of years, the draw took place on 5th January, before changing to 6th January in 2000.
